Psalm 120 is the first of fifteen Songs of Ascents, Psalms 120 to 134, likely sung by pilgrims going up to Jerusalem for the festivals. Meshech and Kedar were distant peoples, far north and in the desert, probably standing for any hostile place far from home. The pilgrimage begins in weariness and longing for peace.
