Psalm 137 comes from the exile in Babylon after Jerusalem's destruction in 587 BC, written there or soon after the return, when their captors mocked them by demanding songs of Zion. Its closing verses echo the horrors that Babylon and Edom inflicted on Jerusalem. It is among the most honest, and most disturbing, prayers in Scripture.
