The first of the psalms of Asaph, one of David's chief musicians and the ancestor of a guild of temple singers. Psalm 50 is written like a prophetic oracle in which God confronts both formal worshipers and hypocrites. Its date is uncertain, and it may have been used at a covenant renewal festival.
