Attributed to Asaph, Psalm 80 mentions the northern tribes of Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh, suggesting it may lament the fall of the northern kingdom to Assyria in 722 BC. It pictures Israel as a vine brought out of Egypt and now trampled. Its refrain has become a prayer for renewal in many generations.
