A covenant with David
Week 4 · Sunday · Psalm 89: Where Is Your Steadfast Love of Old?
For today
God promised David a throne that would last. This psalm sings that promise and later wrestles honestly with how it seemed to fail; Advent holds both, and keeps singing of steadfast love.

verse 1I will sing of the loving devotion of the LORD forever; with my mouth I will proclaim Your faithfulness to all generations. verse 2For I have said, “Loving devotion is built up forever; in the heavens You establish Your faithfulness.” verse 3You said, “I have made a covenant with My chosen one, I have sworn to David My servant: verse 4‘I will establish your offspring forever and build up your throne for all generations.’” Selah
verse 28I will forever preserve My loving devotion for him, and My covenant with him will stand fast. verse 29I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as the heavens endure.

The New Testament echoes this psalm · verse 4
Gabriel told Mary that God would give her son the throne of his father David, and that his kingdom would have no end.
verse 30So the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. verse 31Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus. verse 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David, verse 33and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end!”
verse 22After removing Saul, He raised up David as their king and testified about him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse a man after My own heart; he will carry out My will in its entirety.’ verse 23From the descendants of this man, God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as He promised.
