Preparing for Christ begins with honesty. Ask God for a clean heart and a steady spirit, and for the joy of his salvation to come back to you.

verse 10Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. verse 11Cast me not away from Your presence; take not Your Holy Spirit from me. verse 12Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and sustain me with a willing spirit.

The new heart this psalm longs for is what God promised through the prophets and gives in Christ: anyone who is in Christ is a new creation.
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come!
verse 4But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, verse 5He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done, but according to His mercy, through the washing of new birth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.
